Why does preparation matter?

Microblading is a treatment in which I apply pigment into the epidermis. If the skin is prepared, it bleeds less, takes pigment evenly and heals faster. Poorly prepared skin can mean worse colour retention, longer healing and the need for extra touch-ups.

A month before the treatment

  • Avoid tanning and solariums — tanned skin heals worse
  • Don’t have laser treatments on the face (IPL, CO₂) or deep peels
  • If you take isotretinoin (Roaccutane) — the treatment is only possible 3 months after finishing the course (after consulting your doctor)

7–14 days before

  • Stop retinol, tretinoin and acids (AHA, BHA) — they thin the skin
  • Don’t have peels or microdermabrasion
  • Don’t shape your brows with wax or thread (you can gently tweeze)
  • Don’t schedule the treatment right before your period — the pain threshold is lower then
  • Keep the skin moisturised with a gentle cream

48 hours before

  • Stop blood-thinning medications — aspirin, ibuprofen, Acard (if possible and not prescribed long-term)
  • Avoid alcohol — it thins the blood and weakens the anaesthetic
  • Don’t take high doses of vitamin E and omega-3 supplements

If you take medication long-term — don’t stop it on your own. Tell me about it at the consultation and we’ll assess the situation together.

On the day of the treatment

  • Don’t drink coffee or energy drinks — caffeine increases bleeding and sensitivity
  • Have a light, filling meal — dizziness is more likely on an empty stomach
  • Come without makeup around the brows
  • Come well-rested — a good night’s sleep genuinely reduces discomfort
  • Set aside the whole day with no rush and no important meetings

I write more about the sensations during the treatment in the article does microblading hurt.

What you DON’T need to do

You don’t need to shave or shape your brows before the visit — I’ll design the shape from scratch. You also don’t need to buy any aftercare products — you’ll get an aftercare kit from me after the treatment. I describe the whole visit in the article what a permanent makeup treatment looks like.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink coffee before microblading?

It's not recommended. Caffeine dilates the blood vessels, increases bleeding and hampers the anaesthetic. Avoid coffee, tea and energy drinks for at least 4 hours before the treatment.

When should I stop retinol before the treatment?

Stop retinol, tretinoin and acids 7–14 days before the treatment. They thin and sensitise the skin, which impairs healing and can cause the pigment to fade quickly.

Can microblading be done during your period?

It can, but it's not optimal. A few days before and during menstruation the pain threshold is lower and the skin more sensitive. It's best to schedule the treatment in the second half of your cycle.

Do I need to shave my brows before the treatment?

No. Leave your brows in their natural state — I'll design the shape from scratch at the consultation. The more natural hairs, the better I can see your natural outline.
