How long does healing take after permanent brow makeup?

Regardless of the method — hair-stroke (microblading), powder or combined — brows heal in about 4 weeks. Only judge the final result after this time, never earlier.

The treatment lasts 1–2 years. To make the pigment last as long as possible, aftercare in the first days is key — especially regular rinsing with water and applying a very thin layer of petroleum jelly, following the exact protocol described below.

Note: this guide is about brows. Eyelids and lips heal differently — see the separate instructions: eyelid aftercare and lip healing after lip blush.

Week 1 — redness, dark colour and flaking

Right after the treatment the brows are 40–50% darker than the expected final result. Light redness and swelling are completely normal — the skin is just beginning to regenerate.

On the second day the colour may become even more intense — don’t worry, this is part of the healing process. After 7–10 days the colour will lighten by 30–50% compared with the first days. Itching around the brows is a good sign: it means the skin is regenerating.

How to care for the brows in the first week?

Aftercare is based on regularly rinsing with water and applying a very thin layer of petroleum jelly. Follow the protocol below:

  • The first 4 hours after the treatment: every 30 minutes rinse the brows with water, gently pat dry and apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly — this removes the excess lymph and pigment seeping from the micro-wounds.
  • Until the end of the treatment day: repeat the same — rinsing with water, patting dry and a thin layer of petroleum jelly — every hour until the evening.
  • An hour before sleep: wash the brows with a low-pH soap (no additives) and apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly.
  • Days 2–7: morning and evening, wash the brows with a low-pH soap (no additives) and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly. During the day, every 2 hours rinse with water, pat dry and apply thin petroleum jelly.

What to avoid in the first week?

  • Sun, wind and dust on the brows.
  • Sweating — the gym, intense exercise, sauna.
  • Makeup on the brows and coloured cosmetics in this area.
  • The pool, baths and a direct shower stream on the brows.

Week 2 — the skin flakes, the colour fades

In the second week the skin becomes dry and rough. The skin (scab) starts to come off on its own — never scrape or peel it off. Removing it early can take the pigment along with the skin and leave gaps.

The brow colour may seem much lighter or even invisible. This is an optical effect, not a mistake. The new skin is thin and semi-transparent, so the pigment appears “covered”. The pigment is sitting in the skin — it will come back after healing.

Week 3 — brows almost healed, time for UV protection

The third week is the point where most clients feel a significant improvement. The skin looks almost normal and the brow colour becomes more defined.

Now SPF 50+ sun protection on the brow area becomes your best friend — UV is the main factor that speeds up the fading of permanent pigment. Also avoid retinol, acids and anti-ageing treatments around the brows — they speed up the flaking of the skin, which shortens the pigment’s longevity.

Week 4 — full healing and assessing the final result

After four weeks the healing is complete. Now you see the real result of the treatment — the colour is about 30–50% lighter than on the day of the treatment. This is exactly what well-healed PMU should look like.

This is the right moment to assess whether a touch-up is needed. Book a visit 4–6 weeks after the treatment — that’s when we fill in any gaps, even out the colour and refine the shape if needed. The next touch-up only in 1–2 years.

Summary — what’s most important after permanent brow makeup?

  1. Cleanse and moisturise for 7 days — during the day, every 2 hours rinse with water, pat dry and apply thin petroleum jelly; morning and evening wash the brows with a low-pH soap.
  2. Avoid the pool, sauna, sweating and sun — these are different from gentle cleansing; they speed up fading and can irritate the skin.
  3. Don’t scratch or peel off the skin — the flaking must happen on its own.
  4. SPF 50+ from week 3 — the filter extends the pigment’s longevity and protects the colour.
  5. A touch-up after 4–6 weeks — don’t judge the result before a month has passed.

Frequently asked questions about brow healing

Why are my brows too dark after permanent makeup?

In the first days the colour is about 40–50% more intense than the final result. The skin at the treated area heals and flakes, releasing the excess pigment.

When do brows look best after microblading?

The skin heals in about 4 weeks, and that's when you see the final colour. Between weeks 2 and 3 the brows may look pale or uneven — that's a stage of healing, not a mistake.

What should I do if my brows are flaking after the treatment?

Don't scratch or scrape the skin — the flaking must happen on its own. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly according to the recommended aftercare protocol.

Can I wash my brows after microblading?

Yes — the aftercare is based precisely on regular cleansing. Rinse the brows with water and wash them with a gentle low-pH soap morning and evening, and after each wash apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly. Only avoid the pool, sauna and intense sweating.
